Hello, and welcome to my page! My name is Melissa Moreno (formerly Flores), and I was born and raised here in Porterville. I attended West Putnam Elementary School, Bartlett Jr. High, and I graduated from the AWESOME Monache High School! After graduating, I attended Porterville College before transferring to San Jose and then earning my B.A. in English from Fresno State. I earned my Single Subject English Teaching Credential from Chapman University while I was teaching at Porterville High School. I later transferred to teach Language Arts at Sequoia Middle School before returning to my alma mater, Monache, in 2013.
I decided to become a teacher at a very young age. I attribute my passion for education to the many outstanding teachers I had the good fortune of learning from here in the Porterville Unified School District. I knew I wanted to come back to Porterville to teach to show students here that, if I -- a Mexican-American girl from Porterville who grew up in poverty -- could go to college and achieve my goals, they could do the same. It warms my heart knowing that some of my former students are now teachers, and many have graduated from college!
I currently teach two English 1 Reading (Edge) blocks and one English 1P Composition/Academic Enrichment block. In the past, I have taught Speech, ELD Academic Support, Senior Practical English, Integrated History, and AVID. The one constant among these various classes is that I teach STUDENTS. Regardless of the course name, my priority is igniting a love of learning and an inquisitive nature in my students. I genuinely care about all of my students, and I hope it is evident to them through my teaching.
